The technology that powers the retail industry is constantly evolving and improving to be faster, more durable and easier to use. Retiring legacy devices and investing in the latest and greatest hardware is an essential part of optimizing internal workflows and maintaining a superior customer experience. When a leading office supply retailer sought to outfit their delivery fleet with new mobile devices, they wanted a cost-effective solution that would ensure they remained competitive. With TRG’s insight and support, the retailer was able to complete this large-scale project without having to rely on multiple vendors, expand or overextend their internal team.
A well-established client-vendor relationship
This retailer originally became a customer in 2011 After years of growth and technology advancements, this customer had accumulated a warehouse full of retired devices that needed disposal. TRG purchased this legacy equipment and was able to repurpose, resell or dispose of it in an environmentally friendly and economic way.
Over the course of the next ten years, this customer continued to work with TRG when devices reached the end of their life cycle. The buybacks eventually evolved into a remarketing program, where instead of us purchasing the devices outright from the retailer, we leveraged our extensive network of brokers, resellers and other end users to resell the equipment and split proceeds with the retailer.
Upgrade legacy devices to improve field service and deliver
Since the bulk of the retailer’s business is driven by office supply deliveries, they set a goal to improve field operations in 2019, specifically streamlining the process of order drop-off and customer sign-off to better serve their customers. To accomplish this, they needed to upgrade their existing mobile fleet.
The customer was initially considering a consumer grade mobile device to keep the cost of the overall project within budget. TRG helped them weigh the pros and cons of this approach and introduced them to several other options, including Datalogic’s commercial grade rugged mobile computers. After assisting the customer with a thorough evaluation of their alternatives, TRG leveraged their well-established relationship with the manufacturer to negotiate a highly competitive package for the rugged devices.
The customer ultimately decided to purchase the Datalogic Memor 10 PDA to outfit their delivery fleets. Key to their decision was the fact that the device runs on Android 8.1 (Oreo) with Google Mobile services, has an integrated 2D imager and is still slim and compact.
Datalogic’s wireless charging system provides their delivery drivers with ultra-reliable contactless charging, which is made even simpler when paired with the Memor 10’s 1-piece swappable battery. The customers’ investment in the devices is protected by the device’s ability to withstand drops from up to five feet onto concrete (with rubber boot).
With the help of TRG, the customer bought over 1,500 of the Datalogic devices to upgrade their delivery capabilities. By working with a third-party managed mobile service provider instead of directly with the manufacturer, the customer was able to purchase devices from multiple OEMs through one vendor and a single point of contact.
Managed mobile services help streamline device upgrades
Working with TRG made it possible for the customer to successfully complete this large-scale project without overextending or expanding their internal team. All of the devices were ordered and sent directly to TRG’s deployment center to be fully configured, kitted and deployed to over forty customer locations. TRG also helped the retailer recycle and dispose of their old tech, as they had for the past decade.
While the new devices are covered under Datalogic’s OEM warranty program, TRG also provides repairs, serving as the customer’s authorized repair facility. Additionally, TRG helps the customer with managed logistics, ensuring they efficiently manage device repairs and updates as needed. All these requests are managed through TRG’s ServiceHub platform, an online asset management platform that provides real-time reporting on all devices in the company’s fleet.
