The Problem
To date, this multinational fast food brand has established more than 5,000 locations across Canada, the United States and other countries — serving millions of customers each and every day.
Our warehouse hardware support began in late 2018 following the company’s acquisition by a major restaurant group. We began by supporting five distribution centers in Canada. At the time, the company handled only two cold storage areas in-house - in the remaining three locations, the company worked with a third party to manage these operations. However, as part of its overall strategic plan, the fast food brand wanted to bring cold storage in-house to all five of its facilities.
The Solution
To support this effort, the company needed a new warehouse hardware solution for scanning and logging boxes in its distribution centers. The solution would need to be durable and resilient, as the fast food brand operates these facilities 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Beyond handheld barcode scanners, the company needed a software update, as well as vehicle mounts for its forklifts to make operations more efficient.
TRG developed a warehouse hardware program, with an Android-based vehicle mount computer at the heart of the package. Since the device was going to be used in temperatures around -5ºF, durability and temperature resistance were critical. Ultimately, the device was selected because of its ability to operate in some of the most rugged warehouse environments imaginable and while employees wore gloves due to the cold.
To ensure the device was effective in this particular application, we developed a new screen and form using terminal emulation software. This transformed the company’s "green screens" into easy-to-use, graphical formats without changing the underlying application.
Another component of the warehouse hardware program were the handheld barcode scanners. Our team identified several ultra-rugged alternatives for the company to consider, one of which utilized Bluetooth communication, so there would be no need for it to be physically attached to the forklift. Using these devices, employees can quickly and easily scan box barcodes to see location and quantity data. We also provided the company with printers to complete the full warehouse hardware solution.
Our team continues to manage service for the company’s barcode scanners and mobile computers, serving as a one-stop-shop for all things related to their warehouse hardware program. For units that are out-of-warranty or covered under our in-warranty repair authorizations, we perform the repair ourselves. If the item is in-warranty or we are not authorized, we manage the logistics to and from the OEM.
The Result
Thanks to our warehouse hardware program, the fast food brand had all of the equipment it needed to bring its cold storage operations in-house, empower its employees to work more efficiently and gain greater visibility into key metrics.
We’re grateful for the opportunity to work with this multinational fast food brand to support its strategic efforts and contribute to a more efficient distribution center environment. Looking for a partner to assist with your warehouse hardware program? Contact TRG today to learn how we can help.
