The Problem
One of the largest manufacturers in the custom metal industry has an unwavering dedication to offering its customers unsurpassed quality and service with every order. To follow through on this commitment, the metal company needed a technology partner equally dedicated to their own continued success.
For years, the metal manufacturer worked with another managed services provider on its mobile technology program— device management and repair for barcode scanners and mobile printers — across their 13 locations. But over time, performance began to suffer, particularly with regard to service and repair. The partner took too long to repair and replace malfunctioning equipment, which caused significant hiccups in the metal company’s manufacturing and supply chain. The company soon found itself in search of a new mobile managed services provider.
The Solution
The metal manufacturer reached out to TRG in 2014 to service and repair the company’s 200 barcode scanners and printers. We quickly remedied the challenges they had faced in turnaround time and repair quality, even providing same-day, onsite repairs when needed. For costly and time-consuming repairs — such as motherboard replacements — we were able to leverage our extensive inventory to provide refurbished devices, which led to additional cost savings for the company.
We later conducted a site visit to assess the state of the overall program and evaluate a replace/repair initiative. We discovered that there were other areas where we could be of service, including the overhaul of a labeling project that the company’s previous managed services provider had begun. Custom 6”x9” tags were not adhering to pallets and were being manually stapled instead. In addition, the cost of each sticker had increased, and with the quantity purchased, created a major spike in overall supply costs.
Ultimately, by identifying a more effective product and negotiating a more competitive price per unit, we saved the metal manufacturer approximately $90,000 annually. What started as a small initiative paid dividends for both parties and served as a major launching point for our relationship with the company. Today, the manufacturer purchases around 600,000 tags from us three times per year, which we store in our facilities, saving them valuable warehouse space. They are then shipped to specific locations on demand.
Currently, we are assisting the company with a technology refresh that will include device staging, configuration, kitting with the proper accessories and deployment to the correct location. Simultaneously, we are assisting the manufacturer with the implementation of a unified endpoint management (UEM) platform to allow for remote management across all facilities.
The Result
What began as a simple initiative to expedite the service and repair of the company’s mobile devices has developed into an ongoing partnership with several long-term projects in the works. By taking a proactive approach to problem-solving, we were able to build trust and establish ourselves as a valuable extension of the company’s business and internal team.
